What is ... squalene?

Squalene

Many skincare cream jars list "contains squalane." Squalane (with an a) is a processed version of squalene (with an e), which is the original active compound. Your body produces squalene naturally. In your youth, it produces plenty, but around the age of 25, production rapidly declines. It is therefore wise to incorporate squalene-rich foods into your diet.

Is squalane-rich cream effective too?

Your skin consists of several layers that together protect your body against external influences. The outermost layer (the stratum corneum) consists of dead cells. Creams, lotions, and other topicals only affect this outer layer. While this can feel very comfortable, it does not nourish the deeper layers of the skin with the substances required to nourish, rejuvenate, repair, and protect your skin. Your skin also requires squalene at a deeper level, delivered through the bloodstream. Hence #eatyourskincare—because a squalene-rich diet contributes to healthy, youthful skin. And that’s not all: your liver, adrenal glands, brain, eyes, and lymphatic system also need squalene. It is therefore smart to consume squalene through your food.

Where can I find squalene?

Your body produces squalene on its own. Plenty until your mid-twenties, after which production drops. Your skin in particular suffers from this deficit, which manifests as drier skin, wrinkles, and other signs we associate with aging. Additionally, squalene is found in shark liver and olive oil. In particular, early-harvest extra virgin olive oil from Koroneiki and Picual olive varieties contains high amounts of squalene.

What is the difference between Squalene and Squalane?

To understand why extra virgin olive oil is superior, we must look at the biology and chemistry behind these two substances:

  • Squalene (with an 'e'): This is the pure, active form. It is a lipid naturally produced by our own bodies (making up about 12% of our sebum) to keep the skin supple and protected. Other sources include shark liver and olives. Nuts, fatty fish, and wheat germ oil also contain trace amounts.

  • Squalane (with an 'a'): Because liquid squalene in an open cream jar rapidly reacts with oxygen (oxidation) and spoils, manufacturers process it in laboratories through a process called hydrogenation. The result is squalane: a stable, chemically saturated oil with a long shelf life.

Why EH1200 is the best source of squalene

If you want to obtain sufficient, healthy squalene, you don't need to purchase expensive, isolated supplements or serums. The secret lies in how specific olives are harvested and processed. VILLA EH1200 olive oil is superior due to a unique holy trinity:

  1. The Picual olive: This specific olive variety is naturally renowned for containing the highest concentrations of squalene among all olive varieties.

  2. Early harvested: The olives for EH1200 are harvested roughly eight weeks before they begin to change color. Although the olives yield very little oil at this stage, the squalene concentration is at its absolute peak.

  3. Unfiltered: By not filtering the olive oil after cold extraction, all microscopic olive particles—and thus the active squalene—remain fully intact and preserved in the oil.

In addition to abundance of squalene, VILLA EH1200 contains a record amount of polyphenols (approx. 1200 mg/kg). These powerful antioxidant-like plant compounds enhance the effects of squalene and naturally protect the oil against oxidation without any chemical processing.

Why EH1200 outperforms squalane

Applying a squalane serum to your skin works well to temporarily protect the stratum corneum, but it does little for true skin rejuvenation. Topicals simply cannot penetrate deeply enough into the skin (which is precisely your skin's protective function). And taking isolated squalane capsules? That removes a single molecule from its natural context, missing out on the complete biological matrix designed by nature. Many isolated supplements fail to deliver for this reason—the body recognizes and utilizes nutrients best in their raw, natural synergy.

When you use EH1200—whether you take a daily shot or drizzle it cold over your meals—you nourish your cells and skin from within in the most effective way possible. It provides deep, structural hydration and cellular protection that processed cosmetics simply cannot match.

In short: Skip the processed, chemically stabilized squalane products. Choose the pure, superior power of natural squalene in EH1200 to give your body optimal support.
